
Pilgrims were rerouted by an overland route to Peebles and to cross the reservoir of the M7 road over the south of Wales on 27 March 1861.
The first goods brought from the new colony arrived from Liverpool on 26 April 1861. Settlers also started establishing a cement plant at Neath to feed the canals and flume-line. The industries were closely tied to an army training camp on the Gold coast called Coldwell for Cuy.
William Sassoon arrived on 11 June 1861 with his wife and daughter and they stayed at Orkney Castle. Sir Walter Scott later said:
